By utilizing reduced raw materials, cleaner energy, lower carbon emissions, and advanced lightweighting technologies, Maxion Wheels has successfully reduced the CO₂ footprint of its steel truck wheels by up to 66%. This breakthrough sets a new industry standard for sustainability and efficiency in heavy-duty transportation.

In the world of commercial vehicles, steel truck wheels are critical for balancing weight and structural durability. Maxion Wheels, a global leader in wheel manufacturing, has pushed this balance further. Having previously reduced the weight of a standard 22.5 x 9.00 steel truck wheel from 41 kg to 32 kg, the company’s latest development has seen this weight drop below the 30 kg threshold for the first time.

This significant weight reduction translates directly into higher payload capacity and improved fuel efficiency, all while maintaining the highest levels of safety, quality, and performance.

Fewer Materials, Lower Emissions

A lighter wheel design directly correlates with reduced raw material consumption. Given that 75% to 85% of production-related CO₂ emissions stem from raw materials, this efficiency is a major driver in lowering the environmental impact.

  • Life Cycle Impact: According to life cycle analyses, while conventional steel truck wheels generate 133.45 kg of CO₂ per wheel during production, Maxion’s next-generation wheels reduce this to just 44.9 kg.

Future-Ready Technology for Electric Trucks

The transition to fully electric trucks introduces new technical requirements for wheel design. An electric tractor unit can be approximately four tons heavier than its diesel counterpart due to battery weight. Consequently, lightweight yet high-strength wheel solutions are vital for preserving vehicle range and payload capacity.

To address the increased axle loads of electric commercial vehicles, Maxion Wheels has developed next-generation 22.5 x 9.00 wheels with a total load capacity of 4,250 kg. This provides an additional 250 kg of payload capacity without increasing the wheel’s mass. Furthermore, as electric trucks rely more on regenerative braking and require less traditional brake cooling, Maxion is utilizing smaller ventilation openings to create more aerodynamic wheel designs, further optimizing vehicle efficiency.
